When I visited Dubai, one of the things I explored was the available mobile network options, especially from a student's point of view. If you are moving to Dubai for the first time for your studies, getting a local SIM card will be one of your first requirements for staying connected with your university, accommodation, friends and family.
The two major mobile network providers I came across were du and e& UAE (formerly Etisalat). Both offer good services, but the right choice depends on your budget, mobile-data usage and personal requirements.
💰 du – A Good Choice for Students Looking for Value
From what I found during my visit, du can be a good option for students who want an affordable and flexible mobile connection.
It offers different prepaid options, so students can choose a plan according to their monthly data requirements. If your university and accommodation provide Wi-Fi and you mainly need mobile data when travelling around Dubai, a basic or mid-range du plan may be sufficient.
Students between 18 and 25 years old can also ask about du Youth Box offers, which are specifically designed for younger users.
Overall, I would consider du if your main priorities are budget, flexibility and reasonable data usage.
📶 e& UAE – A Good Option for Heavy Data Users
e& UAE is another major option and may be more suitable for students who depend heavily on mobile data.
For example, if you regularly use your phone for online classes, video calls, Google Maps, streaming, social media or travelling around Dubai, you may want to consider e&.
Based on what I observed, e& is worth considering if network performance and reliability are more important to you than getting the cheapest possible plan.
🏪 One Important Tip: Visit the Store Before Choosing
One thing I noticed during my Dubai visit was that the websites did not always provide complete clarity about all the plans, combinations and promotional offers available.
Therefore, my suggestion to students coming to Dubai for the first time would be not to select your SIM plan only by looking at the website.
Once you arrive, visit an official du or e& store, explain that you are a student and tell them approximately how much data you need each month. The staff can help you understand the plans currently available and you can compare the options before making a decision.
You can also ask about:
🎓 Student or youth-specific offers
📱 Phone upgrade offers
📲 SIM-only plans
📱 Phone + SIM/package deals
💰 Current discounts and promotions
📶 Data allowances and additional benefits
💳 Monthly or prepaid payment options
This can be particularly useful if you are also planning to purchase a new phone or upgrade your existing device, as there may be offers available in-store that are not immediately clear from the website.
⭐ My Quick Comparison
du: Better suited for students who are budget-conscious, prefer prepaid plans and have regular access to Wi-Fi.
e&: Better suited for students who use mobile data heavily and give higher priority to network performance and reliability.
🎓 My Recommendation for New Students
If you are coming to Dubai for the first time, I would suggest checking both du and e& before making your final decision. Don't simply choose a provider because someone else is using it—your requirements may be different.
If your priority is saving money and having a flexible plan, start by checking du. If you use a lot of mobile data or prefer to prioritise network performance, e& is also worth considering.
Most importantly, visit the store, explain your requirements and compare the plans available at that time. Mobile plans, prices and promotional offers can change, so the best option for you may not necessarily be the same as the one available when I visited Dubai.
This information is based on what I observed during my visit and is intended as a general guide for students. Always confirm the latest prices, terms and offers directly with the provider before purchasing.
